• August 7: Cataño hosts Retretas Bohemias, a festival that honors the diverse musical tradition of Puerto Rico. Musicians, trios and all kinds of bands participate, along with plenty of dancing and food kiosks.
• August 12-13: I'm a huge fan of Latin pop star Juan Luis Guerra, and he brings his addictive, can't-stop-moving sound to the Coliseo in San Juan.
• August 12-14: Cayey celebrates its patron saint,La Señora de la Asuncion (Our Lady of the Assumption), with processions, music, games and food kiosks.
• August 20: The town of Juana Díaz, known far and wide for its reverence of the three kings (los reyes magos), holds its annual saints wood-carving contest. Saints, or santos, hold a special place in Puerto Rican arts and crafts, and the artists who make them, called santeros, show up to show off their skills.
• August 20: The Cruce a Nado Chavín is a special swimming race named after Chavín, a female paralyzed athlete. Contestants swim across the Condado Lagoon, following one of three routes that vary in difficulty depending on the participant's age (from 9 years of age to over 61). There is also a special route for the disabled.
• August 27: Coors Light throws its Electric Daisy Carnival, a traveling party that will feature everything from rides to music to food and fun.
• August 28: Adrenalina skateboards is running a skateboard marathon in San Juan, including an after party including an expo, live music and other entertainment.

Las casi 5.43 millas de playa del Corredor Ecológico del Noreste (CEN) pudieran ser designadas hábitat crítico del tinglar, informó hoy el Servicio Federal de Pesca y Vida Silvestre (USFWS).

Mediante comunicado de prensa, el USFWS anunció su determinación de revisar la designación actual del hábitat crítico de la tortuga marina, enlistada como especie en peligro de extinción desde 1970.

La decisión de la agencia federal responde a una petición realizada por el Sierra Club el 22 de febrero de 2010, en la que la organización solicitó incluir como hábitat crítico del tinglar la costa del CEN desde Luquillo hasta Fajardo. La petición incluye las playas de San Miguel I y II, Paulinas, El Convento Norte y Seven Seas. Ocupa hasta 40 metros o 132 pues tierra adentro desde la marea alta promedio.

Al mismo tiempo, el National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS) considera una petición para designar hábitat crítico del tinglar una porción de hábitat marino del CEN.

"Las playas del CEN son importantes para el anidaje del tinglar. Datos recogidos por el Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales indican que un promedio de 213 nidos de tinglar se reporta anualmente en estas playas", destacó el USFWS.

La agencia federal indicó que entre el 2000 y 2005 se registró un promedio anual de 469 y 882 nidos de tinglar en las playas de Puerto Rico. Se estima que la población de tinglar en el océano Atlántico norte ronda los 34,000 y 94,000 individuos adultos.

El USFWS indicó que ya estaba pautada una revisión exhaustiva del estatus del tinglar, por lo que la revisión del hábitat crítico se hará dentro de ese proceso. Hasta que el USFWS y el NMFS lleven a cabo sus revisiones de estatus pendientes, el hábitat crítico del tinglar se mantendrá inalterado.

En marzo de 1978, el USFWS designó como hábitat crítico del tinglar una playa de la vecina isla de Santa Cruz, que hoy día es el Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre de Sandy Point.
